Draining pool water is common practice and maintenance for the pool.  One of the main purposes to do this is to prevent high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). As TDS levels get higher they begin to interfere with the chemicals used to keep the water sanitary and clear. The higher the TDS, the more chemicals it takes which can be unhealthy for the skin and can even damage the pool as well.

Sand changes are recommended once every 3 to 6 years. Time eventually makes the grains of the sand smooth which allows debris and dirt back into the pool. Sand filters require specialized Silica sand and are generally labor-intensive and delicate procedures. The plastic laterals can wear down over time and easily break- making the job more expensive than need be!
